Edfu and Kom Ombo, EGYPT, 3/24/2010 Between Aswan and Luxor is located the major Ptolemaic temple of Edfu - the best preserved major temple in Egypt. The temple is dedicated to the falcon god Horus and was built over a 180-year period from 237 BC to 57 BC. Inside the temple's pylons is a large courtyard. Just before the entrance to the first of two hypostyle halls is a welcoming statue of Horus. Inside the hypostyle halls are dominated by a forest of towering columns. While you are approaching the beautifully illuminated temple complex, you become aware of its enormous dimensions. with a vast courtyard, a forest of towering columns and high ceilings. The entrance way is framed by two huge falcons with a statue of the pharaoh leaned against them. Horus is associated with higher vision and clarity. The eye of Horus greatly relates to his myth and power. The left eye represents the lunar, the moon the intuitive, the feminine energy. The right eye is connected to the solar, the masculine, the action, and the yang energy.
While the stone differs from that of all the other temples perhaps because it was covered with sand for so long, the outstanding feature of the Kom Ombo Temple is the unusual, even unique, ground plan, the result of the unification of two adjacent temples, each dedicated to a distinct divinity: the crocodile-headed Sobek, god of fertility and creator of the world, and Haroeris or the ancient falcon-headed Horus, the solar war god. Sobek the crocodile God sprung into creation from the primordial waters of darkness. Horus the Hawk represents the higher perspective and the golden light. The duality of light/ dark, yin/yang, conscious/unconscious is apparent in this ancient site. One of the most powerful places in Kom Ombo is the Seat of Neutrality, which is placed on the exact centerline between the parts of the temple that are dedicated to Horus or Sobek and Light or Dark. Just sitting on this stone seat you enter into a state of neutrality and complete stillness and any thoughts you may have had simply vanish.
